At last the judgement has come for the long awaited case. It’s good to see that the criminals are getting a capital punishment in India as well. But is this really enough?? The judgement has come after a whopping long time of 11 years after the crime that too because of the loud public outcry. Other wise it’d have easily extended for a few more years. There could be many such cases and many of them are easily getting acquitted out of their crimes. There is also a possibility of the Santhosh singh appealing for the higher court and we don’t know what will happen after that.

There are many people who are very happy with the judgement, I guess. There will also be some people who may cry against this judgement as inhuman. They will talk about the giving opportunity for the criminal to get rehabilitated. Every one has got the right to have their opinion.

The same way, even I have my opinion. I strongly feel the punishment is not enough. If the purpose is to send the shivers across the spines of the other potential criminals, the punishment should be much stronger. It should be in lines of the punishment given by the Arab countries or more barbaric than that. The punished should feel that death is much better. It’s not that I’m in support of giving brutal punishments, but I only feel that it should be able to serve some purpose atleast. Anyway it can’t get back the life and dignity of Priyadarshini mattoo. So atleast it should be able to spread a sense of fear amongst those having such intentions.

It has become a norm for the public to make a hue and cry whenever such incidents come to limelight by the media. But there could be many such cases. What about them?? All the victims can’t go to courts to get the justice. Even if they go to court, there is no guarantee that they will get justice. Even if they get the justice, what can they do with that? They can’t get back their life or their happiness or their dignity or whatever it is that they have lost. So it is the time we should think about preventing such crimes to happen rather than thinking about what type of punishments should be given to the convicted.

These punishments and all such things just try to repress the evil desires and impulses by means of fear factor. But it’s just a repression and not the removal. And these repressed impulses will surely come out whenever the conditions are suitable. If we want to have a healthy society, we need the individuals free from these thoughts and impulses and not those carrying time bombs which no one knows when they will explode. So we need to think now, how this can be achieved!!

I have given a talk similar to this in my class some time back. I stressed the need for the right education and as I expected, I had to face a lot of criticism from my professor (he being the hard core communist and communists by nature oppose the change and new things). I strongly feel education is one of the greatest medium from where we can build the society (even in fact nations). Making or breaking of nation can depend on the quality of education that can be provided to its citizens. We are not able to use the potential of education at all. Our education teaches us so many things which we never use in our life and it won’t teach us many of the things which we really need to lead a healthy life. Our education system is just trying to build some mugging machines out of the most powerful brains. If used properly, it can be made to build the super humans, the humans who know how to live, the humans how to treat and empathize with others, who knows what they want in their life and how to go about them with the win-win situations, who knows how to build the society and how to build the nation.

My professor said, ”see, its not yet possible to give education (the conventional) to everyone in our country and u r talking about right education….just forget it ”. My argument was just to change the education system; whatever education u r giving, give it the right one. I’m not suggesting more quantity. I’m just talking about quality and it doesn’t need any more efforts at all. All that is required is right efforts and right intentions!!
